Kileen Gilroy - You Don't Know What Love Is
|
I say when you tell me,
I want to know you
To love me
Is not to only see the way my teeth line straight
Like white picket fences that will someday
Encompass a small blue house
With two kids, a husband and a porch swing.
To love me
Is to open those rusted gates
That won’t budge for anyone
Or anything,
White fences painted over and over again
Layers of paint like cake batter,
Pouring down the edges of the spoon
That scrapes the bowl
Until there is enough to lick.
You don’t know what love is,
But I do.
Love causes desperation
To run through my body like blood
To a heart that burns like churches
Set ablaze when night falls
And a town sleeps.
The only way to love me
Is to grab my face
Push me up against a wall
