A Poetry Magazine
Hello and Welcome to Mastodon Dentist. The name is
taken, of course, from Henry Miller's Tropic of Capricorn.
We continue to define what that means to us, with the
help of all of the wonderful contributors over the years. I've
taken it to mean the conspicuous brilliance that stands
out in an otherwise nondescript room, much like Mr.
Miller's desk.
What I mean by that is a poetic aesthetic that I continue to
define as editor. I believe that less is more and that
sometimes one can try too hard. I look for the ability to
communicate something real when I read a piece of
writing, I long to be surprised, thrilled, floored. Honesty
and purity of thought, the freedom of emotion, the only
limitations placed on the sublime and surreal being one's
own boundaries of experience. We try not to get into
political, religious or social debates.
As an editor I reserve the privilege of making comments
and suggestions to help you hone your work to our ideal. I
will offer to make grammar and spelling corrections -- I
don't believe in just disqualifying work that isn't perfect.

We welcome submissions on a continual basis. The
deadlines for each quarterly issue are as follows:
Winter Issue: October 31 (Published in January of
proceeding year)
Fall Issue: July 31 (Published in October)
Summer Issue: April 30 (Published in July)
Spring Issue: January 31 (Published in April)
Send 5 poems max. and a short bio if you want to include
one. Include your poems in the body of the message or
better as a single Word file. We do not accept
simultaneous submissions at this time.
You will receive an automated response letting you know
we have received your submission.
